His dedication and skills were so impressive that, by the time he was 16, he could complete floorings single-handedly for his older brother’s business. At just 18 years old, Giovanni took a bold step and invested 50% of the capital to form a business partnership with his brother, laying the foundation for F.LLI Barbieri. The company, which had already started producing tumbled marbles for its own projects, soon became a hub of creativity and innovation under Giovanni’s leadership.


Recognizing the importance of knowledge and education, Giovanni began attending school courses in interior design from 1989 to 1997. These courses not only honed his skills in interior design but also introduced him to a network of architects who would become essential collaborators in his journey.


Giovanni’s collaborations with the architects from his classes facilitated a period of immense growth. He became the sole project developer and marble tile supplier, exclusively sourcing from the Family Stone company. His attention to the production process and innovative designs earned him accolades in both the local and international markets.


As Giovanni’s reputation in the design world continued to soar, he delved into the realm of patents, developing several groundbreaking techniques and inventions. In the late 1990s, he introduced patents like “MARMO ANTICO LUCIDO,” “FRAMENTI BORDER,” and “TIMEWORN MARBLE,” which revolutionized the use of marbles in contemporary art and design.


His creations did not go unnoticed. Giovanni received special mentions and awards at prestigious events like the Contemporary Art Competitions in Torino in 2003 and the London Surface Design Award in 2014. These recognitions cemented his position as a visionary and master of his craft.


Giovanni’s journey is marked by fruitful collaborations and a constant drive for inspiration. One of his most successful partnerships was with Sara Baldwin, leading to the development of the popular Timeworn Mosaics collection and the Ambra collection. These collaborations not only enhanced the artistic value of his designs but also made them more accessible to a broader audience.


Furthermore, Giovanni’s innovative approach extended beyond marbles. In 2013, he introduced the world’s first true 3D porcelain tile collection, “TRILOGY,” showcasing his ability to push boundaries and explore new materials for unique designs.

As Giovanni’s career continued to flourish, so did his accolades. In 2020, his Terrazzo Collection “The Fine Lines” was nominated the Overall Winner at the SBID Product Design Awards in London. He was also recognized by INTERIOR DESIGN USA as one of the four best Product Designers.


In 2021 and 2022, Giovanni’s exceptional work was acknowledged with the prestigious Red Dot Product Design Awards. The “Squar[e]” ceramic tile and “Le Piastrelle Segnate” for Fornace Brioni earned him these coveted awards, further cementing his status as an industry leader. In 2023, Giovanni Barbieri signed a strategic partnership with Dogado Agency.
